I’ve lived in D.C. for almost four years. I grew up in Addis Ababa. I haven’t been back home yet. I always miss the vibe in Ethiopia. Addis Lidet, our church here in Silver Spring, has some of that feeling.
As a musician, the competition here is tough. It’s hard to survive just making music. But music has also given me the opportunity to visit many states around the country. We’ve played in Atlanta, Seattle, and Las Vegas.
My favorite artists are gospel singer Kalkidan Tilahun and Mulatu Astatke. Mulatu is the creator of Ethio Jazz, fusing Ethiopian and western music. And he was the first musician to introduce Ethiopian music to the rest of the world. My teachers have showed me how to stay humble with a commitment to learn. And be punctual.
